In mid-May 2024, the 33rd session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice took place at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna. This Commission guides the United Nations in the fields of crime prevention and criminal justice.
During a key side event, the leadership of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), INTERPOL, and UNODC met and issued a joint statement calling on states to intensify their efforts to combat the vast profits derived from cross-border organized crime.
They emphasized the urgent need to focus more on the proceeds of crime and the underlying illicit financial networks in order to dismantle and disrupt criminal organizations more effectively. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC, stated: “Money laundering, terrorist financing, and their enabling activities drive instability, violence, and exploitation across the world. Safeguarding financial integrity is critical to promoting peace and security, supporting sustainable development, and protecting the most vulnerable.”
