In mid-May 2024, the 33rd session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice took place at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna. The Commission leads the United Nations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.
In an important side event, leaders from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), INTERPOL and UNODC met and issued a joint statement calling for states to step up their efforts to tackle the massive profits from cross-border organised crime.
They emphasised the need to focus more intensively on the proceeds of crime and the illicit financial networks behind them in order to combat and dismantle criminal networks more effectively. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC, said: "Money laundering, terrorist financing and their operations fuel instability, violence and exploitation around the world. It is crucial to protect financial integrity in order to promote peace and security, support sustainable development and protect the most vulnerable."
