What Are Deepfakes?
Deepfakes are computer-generated fake media content created using artificial intelligence. They are typically used to manipulate a person’s appearance or voice in audio files, videos, or images, creating the impression that the individual has made statements or taken actions that, in reality, never occurred. The technology behind deepfakes relies on generative neural networks, specifically a method called deep learning.
How Do Criminals Use Deepfakes?
Fraud:Criminals can use deepfakes to impersonate others and carry out fraudulent activities. For instance, they might create fake videos impersonating public figures to solicit money from unsuspecting victims or to promote fake investments.
Reputation Damage:Fake videos or images can be spread to falsely suggest that a person is involved in questionable or illegal activities. These fabricated “proofs” can lead to serious personal and professional consequences, severely damaging someone’s reputation.
Political Manipulation:Deepfakes of politicians or influential figures can be used to deliberately spread misinformation. Such manipulated media can influence public opinion or even interfere with democratic elections.
It is essential for society to be aware of the existence and risks of deepfakes and to develop mechanisms to detect and contain their spread. This includes both public awareness and technical solutions for deepfake detection.
